Sleeping Erections

What are sleeping erections?

Some men worry they have erections during night while the others worry they don’t have it. So is it good or bad to have erections in sleep?

Penis when in healthy state has several erections during our sleep time without us wanting it either way. This happens when you are completely relaxed, during deep sleep (REM state).

It is believed by many it assures healthy sexual function (a correct term is Nocturnal penile tumescence). If you can get an erection during sleep and can’t get erection during sexual encounter it indicates it is most likely a psychological problem.

If the problem would be in penile function, it would be unlikely to have an erection while sleeping. Penis would simply not function.

Sometimes it is difficult to know if one has erections while sleeping. There are endless methods to find out. One of the simple ones is attaching moistened stamps to penis. If it they break by the morning the indication is you had an erection.

Why do we have them?

It is not completely understood why this happens, there are just hypotheses available. One extra reason which may contribute to an erection can be also a pressure from full bladder. Erection may prohibit nocturnal urination when bladder is full.

There are other theories describing how it contributes to good penile function and growth. In any case erections during sleep are important to our wellbeing.
